Texas Property Tax Rates 2025 by County and City, Plus a Savings Calculator
Texas has no state income tax, and no state property tax either. Instead, your county, city, school district and a few special districts each set their own rate. Add them up and most Texas homeowners pay roughly 1.6% to 2.5% of their home’s taxable value a year.

How to lower your bill
- File your homestead exemption with your county appraisal district. It’s free and you only file once.
- Protest your appraisal if the value looks high. The deadline is usually May 15 or 30 days after your notice, whichever is later.
- If you’re 65+ or disabled, file for the extra exemption; your school taxes are then capped at that year’s level.

Common questions
How are property taxes figured in Texas?
Each taxing unit (county, city, school district and special districts) sets a rate per $100 of taxable value. Your bill is the sum of each unit's rate times your home's value after exemptions, divided by 100.
How much is the Texas homestead exemption?
School districts must exempt $140,000 of a homestead's value, plus another $60,000 for owners 65 or older or disabled. Any taxing unit can add a local option exemption of up to 20% of the value.
Does Texas have a state property tax?
No. Property taxes in Texas are all local: counties, cities, school districts and special districts.
